Sixteen: A Mother’s Tale – a microstory

Lavender sheets,
Tiny princess onesies,
Remind me of you.

I can still feel
Your soft skin,
Hear your sweet laugh.

I imagine you now
In vermilion fabric
Wearing a white corsage.

I missed so much,
Lost,
Chasing demons

In spoons
And needles.

  1. Love those last three lines–for the deftness of the image and the way they put a sudden, chilling spin on what was looking like a sweet, nostalgic story.

  2. What are you trying to do to me? First all …awww…and then like… damn. I didn’t see it coming. In fact, I was in such denial I imagined a baby spoon but then couldn’t fit in needle and I had to accept. Well done.

  3. Melony, this is wonderful. I love how you lull us into believing this is a simple “my, how you’ve grown” story from mother to child and then let it grow into something else entirely. This is my favorite piece of your so far, hands down. Really, really well done.
